Seriously?!?! [16 Nov 2009|11:34am]

Ok to anybody listening. This site needs traffic more than I need therapy. just post any band you think should be considered the best band in the world and I'll spend about 30 min writing a reply to why it shouldn't. post anything please EToS, Finntroll, Alestorm, whatever doesnt have to be finnish, I'm not too picky when it comes to black or melodic death metal.

With cheers to shermarama for the link.

Tuesday 3rd February - Heavy Metal: The New Finnish Folk Music (UCL Masaryk Society)

Quite an interesting talk by the looks of it, being chaired by Titus Hjelm, lecturer in Finnish Studies at UCL and bassist in power metal band Thunderstone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderstone_band).
For anyone who likes death, power, viking or heavy metal, you might find this interesting.
Anyway, it runs from 6 until 9, and it's being held in the basement of 188 Tottenham Court Road.

The Festival Season 2008: the full pictorial story [28 Aug 2008|02:38am]

Bloodstock 2008: A compromised weekend under the rain [27 Aug 2008|05:07pm]

Finally, I wrote it - the Bloodstock 2008 review. As ever, it promises to be the most comprehensive and accurate review you'll witness on the whole of LJ, despite my determined effort this time to cut it into a single post.

As ever, it's been heavily crossposted, and this time the unbelievable novelty of seeing an entry on kivenkantaja joins the usual paper-round that also visits metal_community, metallectuals and heathenforay.

The Epykk Wacken Review [12 Aug 2008|01:39am]

...which will also be seen on metal_community, metallectuals and heathenforay.

( Chapter 1: Get that crane out of my face, you fat fuck! )

( Chapter 2: 35 years of pain... )

A multitude of bands were there. Some of them were from Finland.

Tulkaapa Äijät! [05 Aug 2008|07:41pm]

Expect, rather sooner than I've been doing recently, a Wacken review. Where Heikki Kovalainen's favourite band of all time were playing. Apparently.

Metal Camp: The Review [25 Jul 2008|10:37pm]

Fuckin' hell, this community needs some traffic even more than metallectuals does. So, while this isn't strictly Finland-related, you can at least console yourselves that Korpiklaani, Finntroll and Wintersun were all there.

Ankkarock [29 Jun 2008|04:12pm]

*If this question doesn`t fit the community, please delete*

I`m going to Finland to visit Ankkarock. But have no opportunity to buy ticket in advance.
So is it possible to buy tickets right there at first day?

Who's going to Tuska this year??
And which bands are you looking forwards to see?

I am. And the top bands on my must see list are:

Amon Amarth and

In no particular order. But of course the ones I've never seen before come first. (If it happens that some play at the same time.)

Went to see Moonsorrow two weeks ago. Excellent show, as always. (Must have been at least my 15th time.) Wish they were coming to Tuska this year, too.

Hey everyone!
I'm Haldir... female (yeah don't let the name throw you off), from Toronto Canada and 17 years this November.

Been into a number of Finnish bands for a few months now... my favourites among a shit load would be: Battlelore, Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow, Nightwish, Norther, Turisas, Wintersun... yup :)
Recently been to Paganfest and it was fucking amazing.  Looking to see Finntroll this August and Paganfest again next year. \,,/

Anyway, nice to meet you all and I'll do my best to contribute well to this community! ;)

The Firestorm rages! [28 Apr 2008|06:35pm]

It arrived this morning. Still two days before its official release date. There follows a disjointed collection of my thoughts.

This is the new direction, is it? Clearly that was another Sorvali The Elder prank that most of us saw right through. Think of it more as Viides Luku: Hävitetty track three than the first part of the world's longest EP; in much the same way as its immediate predecessor, this will take up half an hour of your life and make it seem like three minutes. This time, though, they seem to have crammed more into the time; it's noticeably faster through most of its length (think of the second half of Karhunkynsi and you're getting there). The lyrics have helpfully been divided into nine "chapters" - although these don't entirely correspond with how the whole track could have been broken into smaller pieces:
Intro (0m00s - 3m48s) - chapter 1 & narration of chapter 2
Part One (3m48s - 12m45s) - rest of chapter 2, chapters 3-4
Part Two (12m47s - 19m20s) - chapter 5
Part Three (19m20s - 26m43s) - chapters 6-8
Outro (26m43s - 29m32s) - chapter 9

This review has been aided and abetted by a highly appropriate storm kicking off outside as I write it...

The covers:
A conversation I had with blackmetalbaz some time ago lamented those bands who play covers exactly as the originals sounded without adding any of their own sound to it. I am pleased to say this version of For Who The Bell Tolls pulls it off spectacularly... other than Henri's rather strained not-so-suitable-for-thrash voice it sounds more like it came from Verisäkeet than Ride The Lightning. I was originally concerned this would be a throwaway track, given (for instance) Ensiferum's efforts with Breaking The Law and Battery... I should not have worried. As for Back To North: I've never heard the original but they've done a superb job with it.

The re-recordings:
The most obvious change is the amputation of the intro (Osa I: Luo Veljien) from Taistelu Pohjolasta, trimming it down to an eight-minute hit single, and the addition of the kind of chugga-chugga guitar parts that were more at home on Suden Uni. Everything else is there, though, including what sounds like the original keyboard parts. Still, to hear the whole track, you'll have to track down a copy of Tämä Ikuinen Talvi; you can have mine when I'm dead. As for Hvergelmir: that's been given a more thorough update from the squashed-bat-shrieking-over-a-vacuum-cleaner sound of the original, and it's all the better for it. Now, if we can have the same treatment on Fimbulvetr Frost as well...

In summary:
They've done it again. Rapturous applause all round.

Hi. ^^ [05 Apr 2008|10:37pm]

[ mood | awake ]

Name- Hey, I'm Attiqah, and I'm 17 this year. Female, in case you are not too sure about my name.

Location- I live in Singapore, a small island off the coast of Malaysia, in South East Asia. Singapore's pretty okay, but one thing that I hate is that it is INSANELY hard to find non-mainstream stuff, and that includes metal. There are a few shops selling metal, but only the softer, more mainstream stuff.

Favourites- Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius and Nightwish. I'm still a newbie at metal, only discovered the genre late last year when I listed to Sonata Arctica on a random blog. When I listed more and got a few more songs, that's when I was hooked. It was as if something in my life just clicked and since then I've never looked back. As I've said, Singapore is still a pretty conservative society and its hard to find CDs of the rarer bands. I checked in all the major CD shops and I found 1. 1 measly Sonata Album hiding in the lower shelves. If any of the bands I've mentioned ever came, I would check the sky to see if pigs are flying.

I thought I might as well post this peice of info, however sad it makes me.
Stratovarius - Call It Quits

Thanks, and hope to participate more in the community.

I went to see Rotten Sound (@Klubi, Turku) on Friday but as I was sick (and am even more so now) I couldn't quite enjoy the show as much as I would have wanted to..... :/ Loud music and hang over + headache & flu aren't the best combination. Well anyhows, I haven't actually listened to them all that much but most death metal bands work better live, in my opinion.

Next weekend there's a gig I'd really enjoy seeing, Sotajumala + Torture Killer + two others.... (1.3. @ Klubi, Tku) but unfortunately I gotta go back to Tampere on Thursday and I'm a little too poor to come back. Although I gotta see what can be done about that..... haven't seen TK in a really long while and Sotajumala are something I wanna see and hear more.

Damn this spring looks good gig-wise in Turku. (Just like 2-3 years ago...) Too bad I don't live here anymore. :/

I wonder if anyone was there yesterday?
It was a truly amazing gig! And after having a little alcohol that rap music didn't bother at all..
Anyway, Perfect Chaos played very well and the gig is probably now in my top 10..
